About Chhewang Thile Lama
In early November 2007, Acharya Chhewang Thile
Phoenix as Mingyur Rinpoche’s newly appointed
resident lama. Highly qualified, he will help students
with their daily practice and, in the words of
Mingyur Rinpoche, “he can teach anything.”
Chhewang Thile Lama comes to YPPC from
Rinpoche’s Tergar Monastery where he was assistant
khenpo (professor). In addition to completing six
years of shedra (philosophical school), Chhewang
Thile Lama also completed the traditional three-year
retreat. He began learning to speak English at
Sherab Ling, seat of HE Tai Situ Rinpoche in
Northern India.
Lama’s English continues to improve each day
thanks to the kind contribution of Dr. Larry Pesta,
who teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) at
Estrella Mountain Community College, and thanks
to several students who help Lama Trinley practice
his lessons.
Many have already remarked on Lama’s kindness, patience, and quick mental facility.
Those who know a little Tibetan are also enjoying his breadth of knowledge in both the
Nyingma and Kagyu lineage practices.
Lama leads Tibetan pujas (offering prayer/meditations), and will begin giving public
teachings when he feels his English is sufficient. However, many students are already
asking him questions and learning.
